AO Trauma Masters Course—Shoulder Trauma

Course description

The course combines evidence-based lectures, small group case discussions, anatomical specimen dissection, and fixation procedures to improve knowledge and skills in the key surgical techniques to treat shoulder trauma. Active engagement by all participants is critical to the effectiveness of the course.

Goal of the course

Participants will learn the current management of patient pain, dysfunction, deformity, and cosmesis related to trauma of the shoulder. We will cover fractures from the sternoclavicular joint to the humeral shaft, as well as joint injuries, dislocations, and soft-tissue injuries. We will also discuss posttraumatic sequelae such as malunion, nonunion, infection.

Target participants

Orthopedic, trauma, and shoulder surgeons with at least 5 years of experience who are committed to updating their expertise, and who want to manage complications and more complex cases.

Participants should have completed the AOTrauma Courses—Basic Principles and Advanced Principles of Fracture Management and must be able to communicate well in English.

Learning objectives
Perform an appropriate assessment of the patient with trauma to the shoulder
Perform a thorough, systematic analysis of the injury including its mechanical, biological, and soft-tissue components
Identify the advantages and disadvantages of appropriate treatment options
Develop a comprehensive plan based on the needs of the patient, the injury, the patient factors, and the available surgical options
Complete the plan including operative procedures and nonoperative care
Anticipate follow up needs and possible complications, including communicating the overall care plan to the patient’s family and supporting care system
