Course description

This masters course addresses the latest techniques and best practices in operative fracture management to deal with complex orthopedic trauma problems. The course includes many case presentations and group discussions moderated by experts in the field. Best evidence is presented through summary lectures and practical exercises in the anatomical specimen lab.

Course structure

This hybrid course is delivered on 3 consecutive days from 12:00 to 16:00 CET (different modules each day consisting of presentations and small group discussions). Participants will join either online from home or face to face at the venue. Participants who are physically present in Davos will also complete practical exercises and an anatomical specimen laboratory on some mornings and late afternoons (details in the full program).

Course goal

The goal of this course is to increase knowledge and skills for managing difficult and complex cases. State-of-the-art techniques and approaches, best practices for treatment, and the management of complications will all be addressed at a high level.

Target participants

Participants must have completed the AO Trauma Basic Principles and Advanced Principles courses. They must be actively involved in orthopedic trauma management and preferably have at least five years of experience post residency in trauma surgery. Participants must be willing to share their ideas and be able to communicate well in English.


Learning objectives
Manage complex fractures of the proximal femur based on patient age, fracture location and type, and identify and avoid common complications
Apply current evidence to the management of proximal femoral fractures using the latest principles and techniques of internal fixation
Describe and perform surgical approach options for treatment of femoral neck and proximal femur fractures
Identify soft-tissue injuries associated with the pilon and determine correct surgical timing
Assess and apply current evidence when managing complex fractures of the pilon using the latest principles and techniques of internal fixation to avoid complications
Describe and perform the common surgical approaches for tibial pilon fixation
Apply the mechanistic classification and identify soft-tissue injuries associated with tibial plateau fractures
Assess and apply current evidence when managing complex fractures of the tibial plateau using the latest principles and techniques of internal fixation to avoid complications
Describe and perform surgical approaches for the proximal tibia
