Course description

This online course is delivered using interactive small group discussions using cases, and summary lectures. All activities are moderated by expert faculty in a highly interactive learning environment. Participants are encouraged to discuss the cases and content in an open manner and to share their own experiences.

Course structure

This online course is delivered on 3 consecutive days from 12:00 to 16:00 CET (different modules each day consisting of presentations, small group discussions, and other activities). Participants will join online from home for 4 hours each day, and adequate break times will be integrated.

Goal of the course

This course aims to maximize patient outcomes following fractures around the hip, by improving the practicing surgeon's ability to recognize, classify, plan, and deal with these injuries in different settings.

Target participants

The course is designed for experienced, senior orthopedic surgeons and fracture specialists with at least five years experience in treating proximal femoral fractures. Participants need to be willing to share their experiences with and learn from their colleagues and the faculty facilitators.

Participants should have completed the AO Trauma Courses—Basic Principles and Advanced Principles of Fracture Management and must be able to communicate well in English.

Learning objectives
Identify which patients with femoral head or neck fractures will require open reduction
Describe optimum (effective and efficient) approaches for each specific pattern of proximal femoral fracture
Identify and prevent malreduction in femoral neck, per- and subtrochanteric fractures
Employ appropriate reduction sequences and techniques for per- and subtrochanteric fractures
Describe the critical planning points when employing hip arthroplasty as a treatment for failed proximal femoral osteosynthesis
