Goal of the course
The AOTrauma Masters courseHand & Wrist teaches fundamental principles and current concepts in the treatment of Hand and Wrist injuries, incorporating the latest techniques in operative fracture management. The course is the initial step along the path of lifelong learning in the area Hand and Wrist surgery focusing fractures and dislocations along with soft tissue management and coverage.

Target participants
The AOTrauma Course—Hand and Wrist is targeted at Orthopedic / Plastic  surgeons who are interested in and practicing hand surgery who want to update their focus on Hand and Wrist surgery and enhance their skills in the field. The course will focus on complex hand and wrist bone and soft tissue problems at a higher level of understanding. The participants should ideally have attended advanced principles course / AO Hand course and have few years prior experience of working in a hand surgery unit.

Course description
Online precourse self-assessment. The precourse self-assessment consists of multiple choice questions and a survey, and provides participants an opportunity to gain an overview of the important topics from the course.

Course program
11 October as of 18.30h: Participants registration, Opening ceremony, Welcome reception
12 October: Participants registration & Course start
12 - 15 October: Course (including a day in the anatomical lab on 13 October and a Self-Directed-Learning Day on 14 October)

Self-directed learning day
The course includes a Self-Directed-Learning (SDL) day (14 October) where you choose to participate in one of the three modules:
- Elbow injuries
- Intramedullary Nailing
- Polytrauma
-> during online registration process you will be asked to choose your preferred module. Once submitted, the choice of SDL module cannot be changed anymore.

Learning objectives
Describe the treatment of injuries and fracture/dislocation of the Hand and Wrist
Plan a treatment based on assessment, imaging, classification, and decision making
Apply principles in the managementof soft tissue injuries of the hand
Evaluate carpal fractures/dislocations and rationalize treatment plan
Enumerate recent advances in treatment of Hand and Wrist injuries
Learn fixation and soft tissue reconstruction skills in the cadaver lab
