Description
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of these courses, the participant should be able to:
• Understand and apply the basic principles of internal fixation of bone
• Become familiar with the principles and technical aspects of basic and advanced fixation techniques as used in the hand and wrist for fracture repair and reconstruction
• Realise complications, their prevention and management
• Supplement personal clinical experience with these principles and techniques for appropriate patient selection for internal fixation
Wrist Sessions will cover:
• Wrist anatomy and biomechanics
• Distal radius fractures: techniques of Kirschner wiring, external fixation and internal fixation using the AO locking distal radius plating system
• Distal radio-ulnar joint injuries and post traumatic problems
• Fixation of fractures of the distal ulna
• Scaphoid fracture fixation
• Treatment of acute ligament injuries
• Principles of total and partial wrist fusion and application of the AO wrist fusion plate
Features:
• Lectures and presentations by an international faculty of hand and wrist surgeons
• Hands-on laboratory practicals on “Synbone” models using the AO Compact Set
• Lectures and presentations by international faculty of hand surgeons
• Comprehensive coverage of basic and advanced techniques of skeletal fixation
• Small group discussions
• e-learning modules on AO principles
Participant Criteria
The courses are aimed at:
• Surgeons-in-training who desire to learn new techniques and as an advanced course for Consultant Surgeons with an interest in Hand or Wrist trauma
• General Trauma Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons and Orthopaedic Surgeons with an interest in fractures of the distal radius

Transportation
Participants are required to make their own way to the course venue. Weetwood Hall is located near Headingley on the A6120 Northern ring road. It is four miles from both Leeds/Bradford Airport and Leeds City Centre. Free parking facilities are available.
